Hack-your-IKEA

Make your own hack and win design fame!

Platform21, BRIGHT and Superuse called on you to hack an IKEA flat pack. Make your own design out of it with a small alteration or perpetrate an out-and-out hack that gives the object a whole different function. This contest was part of the programme Platform21 = Hacking IKEA in Amsterdam. The winning design will be exhibited at the 2009 Montreal Biennial, of which Platform21 = Hacking IKEA will be part. It was also displayed at the BRIGHT stand during Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven, the Netherlands.

Please note: The contest has closed and the winners have been anounced. You can no longer participate.

Trash to Treasure
Truly hacking IKEA also means hacking the ideological basis the company’s functioning is founded on. Its products are cheap and not made to last very long. So hack those principles! Every night when people put out the trash, you’ll inevitably find various discarded IKEA furniture among the debris. Don’t throw away your IKEA products – make them into something new!

Hack-Your-IKEA
This contest, a joint project of Platform21, BRIGHT and Superuse, was an open call to everyone to hack an IKEA object. That item will change from a disposable piece of furniture into a personal piece of innovation that will always hold a special place in your heart and your house. So if you have an old BILLY, if you are fed up with your KNAPPA or have second thoughts on the LINDVED you bought: start hacking!

The jury members were:
- Erwin van der Zande, BRIGHT editor-in-chief
- Scott Burnham, creative director of the 2009 Biennale Montreal
- Césare Peeren of Superuse and 2012architecten
