Bij een joyride draait het er niet alleen om van A naar B te komen, de rit zelf moet plezierig zijn. Naast techniek, spelen ook sfeer, vorm en esthetiek een hoofdrol. We vroegen 13 ontwerpers die zich normaliter niet met auto's bezighouden, maar onder andere mode, interieurs en sieraden vormgeven, om een radiografisch bestuurbare auto te transformeren tot de auto van hun dromen. Kleefrijder Design: Dinie Besems, directeur Gebakkenlugt - sieradenontwerpster Deze auto illustreert het nieuwe autorijden, kleefrijden. Je rijdt vrij door de stad, maar zodra je de ring op gaat ritst de oTo automatisch tussen de andere oTo's en sluit zich aan in de rij. Je snelheid en energieverbruik worden zo geoptimaliseerd en er zijn geen files meer. A joyride is not just about getting from A to B. The ride itself has to pleasurable. Besides technique, atmosphere, form and aesthetics play leading roles as well. We asked 13 designers that usually don't work with cars, but design fashion, interiors and jewellery for instance, to transform a radio controlled car into the car of their dreams. Deze vrolijke pick-up truck, raceauto en brandweerwagen van Martine Camillieri spraken tot onze verbeelding. Wat een leuke karretjes. Waarom zien onze auto's er eigenlijk zo saai uit? Waarom lijken ze hier niet wat meer op? Denk je eens in hoe het straatbeeld er dan uit zou zien! Het vormde het begin van Platform21 = Joyriding.

Our imaginations were sparked by this sunny pick-up truck, race car and fire truck by Martine Camillieri. Such happy vehicles! It made us wonder why our cars actually look so boring? Why don't they look like these a bit more? Imagine what the streets would look like then! It became the starting point for Platform21 = Joyriding.

Nissan vierde de Europese lancering van nieuw model Cube met een tjokvol programma van mode- en designevenementen. Ook Platform21 werd uitgenodigd. Ter ere van deze speciale gelegenheid maakte Joyriding een comeback en kregen kapotte stoelen een kleurrijk nieuw leven tijdens twee Repairing avonden. Joyriding leverde succesvolle avonden op in Londen, Parijs en Berlijn. Het uitgaanspubliek werd uitgedaagd de auto van hun dromen te maken, waarbij de visuals van VJ Hummer als inspiratie dienden. Met piepschuim en een op afstand bestuurbare auto ontstonden de mooiste en snelste wagens die het tegen elkaar opnamen voor de beste tijd op de racebaan. Met de Trash to Treasure Chair Auction drong het Repair Manifesto door tot het nachtleven van Parijs en Berlijn. Kapotte stoelen kregen een tweede kans doordat bezoekers ze op prachtige wijze repareerden met tape. Veilingmeester Nicolas Ullman verzekerde ieder exemplaar van een nieuw thuis. Platform21 organiseerde deze events in Londen, Parijs en Berlijn op uitnodiging van Nissan, die in deze steden de Europese lancering van het nieuwe model Cube vierde. Er was een speciale Cube store, waarvan het assortiment werd samengesteld door Colette, en een uitgebreid programma van mode- en designevenementen en feestjes. Ontwerper Robert Stadler stelde het designprogramma samen en nodigde naast Platform21 ook Jerszey Seymour, Random-International en Olivier Vadrot uit een avond te organiseren. Nissan celebrated the European launch of its new Cube model with a festive programme of design and fashion events. Platform21 was invited to be part of the celebratrations. For this special occassion Joyriding made a comeback and broken chairs got a more colourful lease on life during two Repairing evenings. Joyriding has led to successful nights in London, Paris and Berlin. We challenged the nightlife crowd to build the car of their dreams; VJ Hummer provided visuals as inspiration. The audience used Styro foam and remote-controlled vehicles to make the coolest, fastest rides and then raced on the track to see who had the fastest time. The Trash to Treasure Chair Auction brought the Repair Manifesto to Paris and Berlin nightlife. Broken chairs were given new lives after visitors taped them back together in wonderful ways. Auctioneer Nicolas Ullman made sure each one found a new home. Below is a visual impression.

Het ontwerp van auto’s zoals we ze vandaag de dag zien, is gebaseerd op hun mechanische fundament, de verbrandingsmotor. We hebben de gewoonte al meer dan honderd jaar op dezelfde manier naar auto’s te kijken. Jose Ramon Lopez Gonzalo vroeg zich af wat er gebeurt wanneer de techniek verandert, zoals nu het geval is?

Wanneer je een auto parkeert, verliest die zijn functie. Wanneer er geen mensen of goederen in vervoert worden, is het als een dood object dat midden in de straat gedumpt is. Tegelijkertijd kennen we nieuwe sociale groepen zoals immigranten en tijdelijke arbeiders. Zij wensen een fatsoenlijk onderkomen en onafhankelijkheid, maar weten niet goed hoe ze dit kunnen verkrijgen. The New Gypsies is een plan voor een toekomstige auto dat deze problemen op zou kunnen lossen en zou passen in een toekomstige omgeving en aansluit bij toekomstige consumentenwensen. De constructie van The New Gypsies is gebaseerd op zijn waterstofbranstofcel-techniek. Deze voorziet in water, elektriciteit en warmte: basiselementen om te overleven. In dit concept voorziet je auto je huis in alles wat het nodig heeft. Het is dus niet meer nodig om aangesloten te zijn op het water- of energienet van de stad. We kunnen wonen waar we willen – de beslissing is aan ons. De auto is niet alleen een voertuig maar ook een rijdende kamer, een verlenging van je thuis, een plek die aangepast en gepersonaliseerd kan worden naar eigen smaak en behoefte. The New Gypsies The car as a living room

Cars as we perceive them today have a design architecture based on their mechanical foundation (the combustion engine). We are in the habit of seeing then in the same way as we have for more than a century. Jose Ramon Lopez Gonzalo questioned what happens when the technology changes – as it is doing right now?

When you park your car, it loses its function. No longer carrying people or goods, it is like a dead object dropped in the middle of the street. Meanwhile, we have new social groups such as immigrants and temporary workers. They wish for a modicum of decency and independence but don’t know how to get it. The New Gypsies proposes the realisation of a future car that could resolve these problems and would fit into a future environment and future consumer desires. The New Gypsies’ architecture is based on its hydrogen-fuel-cell technology. This provides water, electricity and heat: basic elements for survival. It is a concept in which your car provides your home with all the support it needs. So it won’t be necessary to connect to the city’s energy infrastructure. We can live anywhere – it’s up to us. Tijdens presentaties en een discussie, probeerden verschillende specialisten een beter beeld te krijgen en te geven van wat de toekomst voor ons in petto zou kunnen hebben. Welke toekomstige scenario's betreffende rij-ervaring voorspellen zij? Elke spreker beschikte over een eigen specialisatie, maar ze hadden allemaal één ding gemeen: een gedeelde passie voor de toekomst, auto's en het rijden.

Met: Satish Kumar Beella, Ph.D onderzoeker aan de TU Delft Beella sprak over zijn project Light Mobility, waar in 2008 nog een boek van wordt gepubliceerd door 010 Publishers. Light Mobility presenteert een breed overzicht aan voorstellen voor stedelijke mobiliteit, reikend van energie en infrastructuur, via mobiliteitssystemen, tot aan nieuwe vervoersmiddelen voor kleinschalig transport en veelbelovende voertuigen gebaseerd op de fiets. <a href="http://www.platform21.nl/id/4033"><img src="http://www.platform21.nl/image/358/4033-400-280.jpg" height="280" width="400" alt="" /></a> Joseph Simpson, onderzoeker aan de Royal College of Art, Londen Simpson gaf ons interessante inzichten, verhalen en ideeën resulterend uit zijn uitgebreide onderzoek naar de auto in de stad van de toekomst. Zijn theorie: "Om toekomstige steden te laten bloeien, moeten we het gebruik van persoonlijke mobiliteit (auto's) in de stad blijven toestaan, maar de moeilijkheden die dit oplevert zijn problematisch. Het is moeilijk deze problemen op te lossen enkel met de vormgeving van de auto, we moeten samenwerken met mensen uit allerlei sectoren en zo de auto en de stad van de toekomst op elkaar afstemmen." <a href="http://www.platform21.nl/id/4034"><img src="http://www.platform21.nl/image/802/4034-400-296.jpg" height="296" width="400" alt="" /></a> Cynthia Hathaway, ontwerper en curator Hathaway heeft een master in Industrieel Ontwerpen met een specialisatie in experience design. En ze kan het één en ander vertellen over rij-ervaring. Eind 2007 maakte zij een maand lang een roadtrip door de VS. Samen met haar vader, een echte old-timer fanaat, nam ze deel aan een roadtrip bestaande uit auto's uit 1920, wat een ware bezienswaardigheid vormde op de moderne snelweg. Ze filmde deze reis en zal hier een documentaire van maken. The future of the car Future scenarios for our driving experience

During presentations and a discussion, specialists took a deeper look at what the future may bring us. What future scenarios concerning driving experience do they foresee? Each speaker had his particular specialization, but they all have one thing in common: a shared passion for the future, cars and driving them.

With: Satish Kumar Beella, Ph.D researcher at the TU Delft Beella spoke about the project Light Mobility, of which a book will be published by 010 Publishers in 2008. Light Mobility presents a broad overview of considerations in urban mobility, ranging from energy and infrastructure, via mobility systems, all the way to new vehicles for small-scale transportation and promising bicycle derivatives. <a href="http://www.platform21.nl/id/4033"><img src="http://www.platform21.nl/image/358/4033-400-280.jpg" height="280" width="400" alt="" /></a> Joseph Simpson, Researcher at Royal College of Art, London Simpson gave us some interesting insights, stories and ideas resulting from his extensive research into the car in future cities. His theory: "For future cities to prosper, we need to continue to allow the usage of personal mobility (cars) in the city, but the difficulties they create are problematic. And she can tell a thing or two about driving experience. She only just returned from a month-long road trip through the US. Together with her Dad, an old-timer fanatic, she joined a road trip consisting of 1920's cars, causing quite a stir on the modern motor ways. Ehsan Moghaddampour ontwierp Bugiman voor een toekomst waarin autorijden geheel computergestuurd gebeurt, wat van de bestuurder een verveelde passagier maakt. Deze auto is gemaakt om woest off-road te gaan: je leunt onderuit in je stoel en geniet van de hobbelige rit.

De Bugiman is beïnvloed door woestijnlandschappen en rijdt met gemak door het zand dankzij z’n zuigpomp-achtige wielen. Een luchtdruk systeem houdt de auto stabiel en regelt diens hoogte; de bestuurder kan de wielen omhoog tillen en zo van de zandduinen af surfen. Aan de buitenkant van de auto is latex gebruikt om een dynamische vorm te krijgen én om de binnenkant van de auto te beschermen tegen zandschade. Ehsan Moghaddampour designed Bugiman for a future in which driving is totally computer-controlled, leaving drivers merely bored passengers. It’s made for hot off-roading: you just sit back and enjoy the bumpy ride.

Influenced by desert landscapes, the Bugiman easily carves through sand thanks to its suction-cup-like tires. Pneumatic systems keep the car stable and regulate its height; the driver can lift up the wheels and surf the dunes. The body, too, radically departs from conventional design by using latex to create a dynamic shape as well as protect the inner parts from sand damage. Zoals de titel al suggereert is de Soap Box Racer van Marijn van der Pol onder andere geïnspireerd op een zeepkist. Het is de realisatie van een jongensdroom die de auto moet terugbrengen tot zijn essentie.

De Soap Box Racer bezit de romantiek, de techniek en tevens de toegankelijkheid van een doos met vier wielen die je zelf met je vader in het schuurtje maakt. Weg met de cup holders en DVD spelers voor de kinderen. Je gaat de weg op in een open éénzitter, met het wegdek dat onder je door snelt en de wind in je haren. As its name implies, this car by Marijn van der Pol is partly inspired by a soapbox. It is the realisation of a young boy’s dream, meant to bring the car back to its essence.

The Soap Box Racer has the romance, technology and approachability of the box with four wheels you built in the garage with your dad. Gone are the cup holders and DVD players for the kids. You go out on the road in an open one-seater, with the asphalt flying past underneath you and the wind in your hair. Courrèges, het modehuis van André en Coqueline Courrèges, is niet alleen verantwoordelijk voor de uitvinding van de minirok in de jaren '60 maar is ook al jaren actief in het promoten van de elektrische auto voor een schonere wereld. Hun eerste op batterijen werkende auto reed over de catwalk tijdens een modeshow in 1969, aan het begin van hun couture carrière. Sindsdien heeft Coqueline Courrèges nog drie andere prototypes ontwikkeld: de Bulle in 2002, de EXE in 2004 en de Zooop in 2006. Courrèges, the fashion house run by André and Coqueline Courrèges, is not only responsible for inventing the mini skirt in the 60s, but is also a long-time promoter of electric cars for a cleaner earth. Their first battery-powered car drove around the stage during a fashion show in 1969, at the beginning of their couture career. Since then, Coqueline Courrèges has realised three other prototypes: the Bulle in 2002, the EXE in 2004, and the Zooop in 2006. BRIGHT visited her in Paris and raced around in this yellow bubble car. Met de Moovie won André Costa de derde Peugeot Design Contest, gehouden in 2005. Het thema van de wedstrijd was ‘Ontwerp de Peugeot van je dromen voor de directe toekomst’.

Dit resulteerde in een ontwerp voor een voertuig van een toekomst niet al te ver weg, een grotendeels glazen kuip voor twee personen. De inzittenden zijn in perfecte harmonie met het voertuig, worden beschermd door zijn structuur maar worden tegelijkertijd niet afgesloten de wereld. De Moovie bestaat uit twee aan te passen bollen en twee wielen en is daardoor soepel en behendig in allerlei situaties. Het grote glazen oppervlak biedt een panoramisch uitzicht en maakt het manoeuvreren in krappe ruimtes makkelijk. De Moovie is ideaal voor de stad, maar is ook zeer geschikt voor wijdere vlaktes. Voor de Frankfurt Auto Show van 2005 is een levensgrote versie van de Moovie gemaakt. With his Moovie, André Costa won the third Peugeot Design Contest in 2005. The contest’s theme – design the Peugeot of your dreams for the immediate future – resulted in this vision of a predominantly glass vessel accommodating two passengers.

The occupants are in perfect harmony with the vehicle, protected by its structure yet not cut off from the outside world. Moovie sits on two wheels and two adjustable spheres, which give it great agility in all situations. Its generous glass surface provides a panoramic view of the outside world and makes it easy to manoeuvre in tight spaces. Ideal for town use, Moovie would also suit open spaces perfectly. Moovie was made into a full-scale concept car for exhibition at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 2005. Veel automobilisten rijden alleen in hun gezinsauto naar het werk. Ze beseffen dat dit niet bevorderlijk is voor het milieu maar willen ondanks het schuldgevoel de ‘vrijheid’ niet opgeven. Liever hebben ze zelf de macht over het stuur. Om files te vermijden zouden ze bovendien graag motor willen rijden maar dat durven ze niet.

Hugo Vrijdag ontwierp de eMotio om deze sportieve zakelijke rijder aan te spreken. Het ontwerp verenigt ratio en emotie. De eMotio heeft twee wielen voor en één achter. De automobilist stuurt door zijn gewicht te verplaatsen van de ene naar de andere kant van het voertuig. Dit om het actieve rij-gevoel te versterken. De aandrijving gebeurt middels een elektrische naaf-motor in het achterwiel. De batterijen zijn onderdeel van de twee voorwielen en eenvoudig te verwisselen. Wanneer er een standaard accu wordt ingevoerd kan de automobilist deze op alle plaatsen waar stroom aanwezig is verwisselen. Een windmolen in de polder of een zonnepaneel in de woestijn, ieder stopcontact is een potentieel tankstation. Many people drive their family cars to work every day. They realise this is bad for the environment, but in spite of the guilt, they don’t want to give up the ‘freedom’. They’d rather control the steering wheel themselves. They’d prefer to ride a motorcycle to avoid traffic jams, but they don’t really dare.

Hugo Vrijdag created the eMotio to appeal to these sportive commuters. Its design unites reason and emotion. The eMotio has two wheels in front and one in back. The driver steers by shifting his or her weight from one side to the other. This creates a more active driving sensation. The eMotio runs on batteries inside the two front wheels, which are easy to change. It is also possible to use rechargeables.
