Natuurlijk is het leuk om iets te repareren wanneer het kapot is, in plaats van het zomaar weg te gooien. Maar er is een stap die vooraf gaat aan repareren, en dat is voorkomen dat er daadwerkelijk iets kapot gaat. Het kan je veel leed en geld besparen. In mijn filmpje illustreer ik dit op een ironische manier. Maar er zijn veel oplossingen om te voorkomen dat er iets breekt en soms is het makkelijker dan het lijkt. Je trekt toch ook handschoenen aan als je zwaar werk verricht, of je hangt je bril aan een koortje zodat het niet valt... Of course it is nice to repair your stuff when it breaks and to give it a second chance instead of just throwing it away. Het herstellen van stof bijvoorbeeld is vaak een zich herhalend proces van aandachtige, nauwkeurige en langzame bewegingen. Voor dit project heb ik een jurk gemaakt uitsluitend voor dit doel. Ik begon het proces met het herstellen van een gaatje met een stukje stof geknipt uit de jurk zelf. Door het knippen ontstond er, uiteraard, een nieuw gat. Dit gat heb ik vervolgens weer gerepareerd met een ander, iets groter stukje stof geknipt uit de jurk. . . enzovoort. Als de reparatie doorgaat, worden de gaten groter en groter. Mending fabric, for instance, often involves a repetitive process of attentive, precise and slow movements. For this project I made a dress solely for this purpose. I started the process by repairing a little hole with a piece of fabric taken from the dress itself. Cutting out this piece left, obviously, a new hole, which I then mended again with another, slightly bigger, piece of fabric taken from the dress. Again, of course, a new hole appeared which I repaired again . . . and so on. Ik vroeg enkele vrienden of ze nog dingen hadden die kapot waren, en van iemand kreeg ik een klok, of liever gezegd, wat daar nog van over was. Er miste zoveel onderdelen dat - ook al had ik geweten hoe een klok werkt - ik het niet had kunnen repareren. Met de wijzer en het geluid van de klok maakte ik een kort stukje film. Dit herhaalt zich elke 10 seconden gedurende een minuut. Het filmpje telt de seconden en de minuten, zoals een klok dat doet. De film is de klok, gemaakt van de onderdelen van een kapotte klok.

I asked some of my friends whether they had broken things I could repair for them and someone came up with a broken clock, or what was left of it. So many parts were missing, even if I had a clue about how clocks work, it still wouldn’t have been possible to repair it. Using one of the clock’s hands and the noise it could still make, I made a simple movie. The movie repeats itself every 10 seconds, and there is a bigger loop every minute. So basically, the movie counts the seconds and the minutes, the way a clock does. The movie is a clock, made from parts of the old, broken clock.

Mijn Oma en ik Als kind heb ik vier jaar bij mijn oma gewoond. Tijdens deze periode was zij een groot voorbeeld voor mij. Haar manier van repareren en het maken van objecten leek mij vroeger heel normaal, maar naarmate ik ouder werd, begon ik het unieke ervan in te zien. Ze heeft de gewoonte om haar dingen met hele contrasterende kleuren te repareren die het gat of de scheur juist meer zichtbaar maken. Door dit te accentueren, straalt de zorg die zij heeft voor haar materialen er vanaf.

Onbewust repareer ik dingen op een vergelijkbare manier. Op mijn manier, maar toch gerelateerd aan haar. Ik hou ervan om contrasterende materialen en kleuren met elkaar te combineren. Tijdens deze opdracht heb ik haar hele “reparatie” wereld vastgelegd, die rijker was dan ik van tevoren had verwacht. En dit vervolgens weer vertaald naar mijn eigen project. My grandmother and I, As a child I lived with my grandmother for four years. During this time she was a huge role model for me. Her ways of repairing and fixing objects seemed very normal to me, but growing up I start to see the uniqueness of it! She has a habit of repairing her things with very contrasting colours witch makes the hole or rip more visible. By accentuating it, it becomes a visible sign of caring.

Unconsciously I myself repair in a similar way. It is my way, but definitely related to her. I love combining contrasting colours and materials. During this project I documented her whole repaired world which was broader than I had expected. I translated that to my own project. Ik heb 30 mensen een pakketje gestuurd. Dit pakketje bevatte twee stukjes textiel met een vlek en een brief met de vraag of ze deze vlekken voor mij wilden proberen te verwijderen. Ik kreeg prachtige beschrijvingen van hun vlek-verwijder-proces terug. Veel van hen slaagden erin de complete vlekken te verwijderen, sommigen bedachten een andere oplossing.

Beste, Voor het Repairing- project van Platform21, een expositie rondom de mogelijkheden, kwaliteiten en waarden van repareren, verdiep ik mij in het verwijderen van vlekken. Een vlek is immers voor velen een reden om een kledingstuk niet meer te dragen of weg te gooien. Het wassen of schoonmaken van kleding zou je dus kunnen zien als een reparatie. Iedereen heeft wel zijn eigen manier van wassen of vlekken verwijderen. Vaak worden tips en trucs van generatie op generatie doorgegeven. Ik ben geïnteresseerd in deze manieren en gebruiken. Om deze te ontdekken en onderzoeken heb ik jouw hulp nodig. Bijgesloten bij dit briefje zijn twee stukjes textiel met vlek. Zou je deze instructies op willen volgen: • Probeer de vlekken te verwijderen. • Beschrijf je handelingen in stappen (handgeschreven). • Beschrijf ook hoe je aan deze manier van vlek verwijderen komt. I sent 30 people a package. The package contained two pieces of stained textile and a letter requesting them to try and remove the stains for me. I received some beautiful descriptions of their stain removal processes. A lot of them managed to remove the stain completely while some came up with different solutions.

Wanneer ze iets meer belast raken dan ze aankunnen, herstellen ze vervolgens zelf de scheuren en worden daardoor groter en sterker. Als alle vormen zichzelf op deze manier zouden kunnen repareren, is het alleen maar goed wanneer iets kapot gaat, het wordt er immers beter van. Spieren kunnen bijna eindeloos doorgaan zichzelf te versterken en geven het lichaam steeds meer vorm. Hoe zou de wereld eruit zien wanneer alles de zelfreparerende eigenschap van de spier bezit? Met deze vraag in gedachte heb ik geëxperimenteerd met tekeningen, kleuren en foto’s van mijn eigen hand. Breaking and Growing by Kim Hoang I concentrated on the muscles in the human body. Muscles tear when you overburden them. Muscle tissue repairs itself by growing into size so the same way of overuse will not break it again. This is what happens in the gym. What happens when something broken, repairs itself by growing? How would this look? What if things only can get better after breaking it? Deze broek heb ik al sinds mijn tienerjaren. Hij is compleet afgedragen, maar dat draagt alleen maar bij aan zijn charme. De gaten bij de knieën zijn echter iets te veel van het goede, dus besloot ik ze te repareren. Door een lapje stof onder het gat te bevestigen kon ik het zo repareren dat de scheur nog zichtbaar zou blijven. De lapjes stof zijn niet vast genaaid, maar met knopen bevestigd. Op die manier is het mogelijk de lapjes te vervangen met een andere kleur stof om bij je kleding te matchen of om te vervangen wanneer het stukje stof kapot gaat.

I have worn this pair of jeans since my early teens. It is completely worn out now, which only adds to its charms. But the holes in the knee area are a little too much, so I decided to repair them. I attached patches underneath the holes so the texture of the ripped fabric would still be visible. The patches are not sewn on but attached with buttons so I can replace them if they tear or exchange them with other colours to match the rest of my wardrobe.

Soms moet de huid opzettelijk kapot worden gemaakt om iets, wat zich onder de huid bevindt, te repareren. Nadat de huid is geopend, dient deze weer gesloten te worden. De huid repareert zichzelf, maar moet het eerste stukje op weg geholpen worden door middel van hechtingen. De hechtdraden of agraves (metalen nietjes) die hiervoor gebruikt worden, helpen de wond te sluiten en worden na verloop van tijd weer verwijderd. Wat er overblijft is een kenmerkend litteken; een rechte lijn met aan weerszijden kleine stipjes. Dit litteken draagt men het hele leven met zich mee, het is een blijvende herinnering.

Sommige mensen dekken dit litteken het liefst totaal af. Anderen zijn er trots op; het is de getuige van een overwinning en vertelt een verhaal. Het litteken is voor deze mensen als een sieraad op het lichaam. Aesthetic stitch biedt voor deze groep mensen de mogelijkheid hun litteken extra aandacht te geven. Het unieke verhaal wat achter het litteken schuilt, krijgt door een speciale manier van hechten ook een uniek uiterlijk. De hechting is functioneel en tijdelijk. Het litteken dat ontstaat is visueel en blijvend. De Aesthetic stitch is een hechting die zowel praktische eigenschappen heeft als visueel aantrekkelijk is. Het wordt in de wond gelegd en doet daar functie om de wondranden bij elkaar te houden. Het enige verschil is dat deze hechting blijft zitten, het wordt onderdeel van het litteken. Sometimes the skin needs to be cut on purpose, in order to repair something that lies underneath. After the skin has been opened, she should be closed again. The skin repairs itself, but needs a little help in the form of stitches. The stitch yarn or agraves (metal staples) that are used for this help to close up the wound and are removed after a while. What is left is a characterizing scar, a straight line with little dots on each side. People carry this scar with them for the rest of their lives. It is a permanent memory.

Some people cover their scar carefully. Others are proud; it is the witness of a victory, it tells their story. Aesthetic stitch offers these people the opportunity to put more attention to their scar. The unique story that lies behind the scar gets a unique appearance because of a special way of stitching. A stitch is functional and temporary. The scar that arises is visual and permanent. The Aesthetic stitch is a stitch which has functional properties as well as a visual attractive appearance. It is put into the wound in which it functions to keep the edges of the wound together. The only difference is, that this stitch will not be removed; it becomes a part of the scar. Together with the scar, Aesthetic stitch will form a permanent memory. Aesthetic stitch is offered to the patient as an alternative for the regular way of stitching. Ik verdiepte me in het verwijderen van vlekken. Een vlek is immers voor velen een reden om een kledingstuk niet meer te dragen of weg te gooien. Het wassen of schoonmaken van kleding zou je dus kunnen zien als een reparatie. Er zijn zoveel verschillende manieren om vlekken te verwijderen: bleken, schrobben, uitwassen. Maar waarom maken we de kleur van de vlek niet de kleur van het kledingstuk? Zo verandert een kledingstuk met vlek in prachtig gekleurd textiel.

Mijn inspiratie voor dit project over repareren komt voort uit een inwijdingsritueel voor mannen van een Afrikaanse volksstam. Dit inwijdingsritueel staat in het teken van het maken van snedes in de huid, wat over zowel het hele lichaam wordt gedaan. “The initiation process is not about looking beautiful, it's about becoming part of the community, and it's about becoming real men. De huid zal zich herstellen, maar de sporen van het inwijdingsritueel zullen voor altijd zichtbaar blijven. Een belangrijk moment in het leven wordt hiermee vastgelegd. Het filmpje dat ik heb gemaakt geeft het proces weer van breken en scheuren en zichzelf herstellen of helen. Door het filmpje achterstevoren af te spelen, realiseer ik een definitieve gebeurtenis. De film wekt de illusie dat dingen terug gedraaid of ongedaan gemaakt kunnen worden, in tegenstelling tot het inwijdingsritueel, dat voor altijd zijn sporen achterlaat. Helen is een tijdelijk proces. Ook rituelen zijn van tijdelijke aard en misschien zullen uiteindelijk helemaal verdwijnen. The initiation rituals for boys becoming men of a particular African tribe is my inspiration for this project. During their initiation ritual the boys receive cuttings in their skin. Their whole body will be ‘damaged’ by the cuttings of their initiation. The initiation process is not meant to look beautiful, it's about becoming part of the community and about becoming a man. Humiliation is part of this process, it reminds them of authority. “I will be strong.” “I will change.” “I am only a little bit of an adult.” “After this I will be a whole/complete man.”

The injured skin will recover and heal itself though the scars of their initiation will remain. The scars are a reminder to one of the most important happenings in their life. The movie I made shows the process of demolition and its repair. By playing the movie from back to front, I want to focus on the fact that the moment has really happened. This movie also gives the illusion that things can be undone. The material I chose to use is able to repair/heal itself to its original form or state in contrast to the initiation cuts of the African tribe. It can continiousely damage and later 'repair' itself into a state in which it is not visible that anything had happened. The process of damage and repair is a temporary process like the healing process of cuts in the skin. Where the initiation rituals of the African tribe might not remain forever, they will probably eventually dissapear.
